Toyota showcases autonomous drifting Supras at CES 2025, pushing the boundaries of self-driving tech with race cars that drift on their own.
Toyota Unveils Self-Drifting Supras at CES 2025
At CES 2025, Toyota made an exciting revelation, showcasing two self-drifting Supras that demonstrated the future of autonomous driving technology. The demonstration, presented by Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda, featured a short video highlighting the impressive capabilities of these autonomous race cars. In the video, the Supras effortlessly drift, accelerate, and steer without any human input, although a driver is visible in the seat, not touching the steering wheel or gear shifter. The word “AUTONOMOUS” was prominently displayed on the car’s center screen, making it clear that the Supras were fully in control of their actions.
Toyoda, who is also Toyota’s Master Driver, expressed his initial skepticism about autonomous vehicles, admitting that he once found them “boring.” However, he was clearly impressed by the self-drifting technology, commenting, “As the kids would say, ‘that slaps’ and ‘I’m totally here for it.’” This isn’t the first time Toyota has demonstrated autonomous drifting, as the Toyota Research Institute (TRI) tested similar technology in 2022, aiming to use controlled drifting to navigate obstacles or hazardous road conditions.
The presentation also highlighted Toyota’s broader efforts in autonomous vehicle development, particularly at its Woven City initiative, a smart city focused on advancing technologies like autonomous driving. According to Toyoda, the company plans to develop autonomous vehicles at Woven City, showcasing how such innovations could transform transportation in the near future.
Toyota’s self-driving cars will be powered by the NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin platform, running on NVIDIA DriveOS, which is designed for safety and AI-powered driving. While Toyota didn’t reveal detailed plans for future autonomous vehicles, the company’s collaboration with NVIDIA signals its commitment to pioneering AI and robotics in the automotive sector. Early projects like the e-Palette, an autonomous vehicle aimed at providing driverless transport solutions, suggest Toyota is laying the groundwork for the future of self-driving technology.
